The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a directive requiring all mobile handset manufacturers and importers to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on their devices sold in India. The directive mandates that the app must be accessible from the first use or device setup and should not be disabled or uninstalled by users. This move aims to empower mobile users to verify the authenticity of their handsets and report cases of theft or fraud effectively.
Sanchar Saathi, developed by the DoT, enables users to check the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) to confirm handset genuineness. It also offers features such as reporting stolen or lost phones, cyber fraud, and spam calls. The app’s integration with SIM cards and phone numbers allows continuous security monitoring, helping prevent misuse and enhancing telecom cybersecurity across the mobile ecosystem.
Manufacturers, including major smartphone brands, are given a 90-day window to comply by preloading the app on new devices and rolling out software updates for existing devices. This initiative addresses the growing concern over counterfeit handsets and SIM-related fraud, helping users and law enforcement agencies track and block unauthorized devices swiftly.
This regulatory step is poised to significantly reduce mobile handset-related fraud and strengthen the overall safety of India’s telecom environment.
