Assam is set to enter India’s high-tech manufacturing landscape, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announcing plans for the state’s first mobile phone manufacturing unit. The move marks a strategic shift from the state’s traditional economic drivers tea, oil, and agriculture toward advanced electronics production.
Sarma revealed the plan on January 9, 2026, through a post on X, writing, “Made in India, Made in Assam Coming Soon: A mobile phone manufacturing unit in Assam!” The announcement follows his earlier comments that discussions were in advanced stages to secure a handset production facility for the state.
The initiative builds on Assam’s growing semiconductor foundation, anchored by Tata Group’s upcoming Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor assembly and test facility at Jagiroad in Morigaon district. As per Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the facility will start production in 2026, manufacturing around 48 million chips daily for automobiles, mobile devices, and AI applications.
According to RBI data cited by Sarma, Assam has emerged as India’s fastest-growing state economy, with its gross state domestic product expected to surge from Rs 4.10 lakh crore in 2020–21 to Rs 7.41 lakh crore in 2025–26 a 45 percent growth compared to the national average of 29 percent.
While details such as investment size and location remain under wraps, officials say the mobile unit will create employment opportunities and boost local supply chains, aligning closely with India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics manufacturing.
