Anthropic has expanded the capabilities of its Claude AI lineup with Cowork, a new feature designed to help non-technical users automate everyday computer tasks without writing code. Available exclusively through the Claude macOS app, Cowork allows users to grant Claude access to specific folders, letting the AI create, edit, and organize files directly on their devices. The move marks Anthropic’s effort to reposition Claude from a developer-focused tool toward a broader productivity assistant.
Cowork originated from user behavior around Claude Code, Anthropic’s command-line automation tool launched in late 2024. “We saw people using it for everything taxes, receipts, file organization, even life admin,” Anthropic engineer Felix Rieseberg told CNET. What began as a coding utility quickly evolved into a general-purpose workflow tool, prompting engineers to build Cowork on the same Claude Agent SDK. The feature was reportedly developed in less than two weeks, much of it powered by Claude Code itself.
In its early phase, Cowork can help users clean messy downloads folders, generate spreadsheets from receipts, and assemble reports from notes. It also connects with services like Gmail, Notion, and Google Calendar and supports browser tasks through Claude for Chrome.
Anthropic cautioned users that Cowork can take “potentially destructive actions” such as deleting files if instructed, and noted that preventing prompt-based security risks remains an active challenge. Cowork is currently available as a research preview for Claude Max subscribers, priced between $100 and $200 monthly, with macOS access only. The company plans broader platform support as it continues expanding its fast-growing AI agent ecosystem.
