Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) launched Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) services across all telecom circles in India, enabling users to make crystal-clear calls and send SMS over any WiFi network using their existing mobile numbers. The rollout, announced late December 2025, marks a key upgrade for the state-run telecom as it races to match private rivals like Jio and Airtel.
VoWiFi leverages IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology for seamless transitions between WiFi and cellular networks, delivering superior indoor voice quality in homes, offices, and low-signal zones without extra apps or fees. Most modern smartphones support it via simple settings toggles, treating calls like standard voice usage while routing data over WiFi.
The service bolsters BSNL’s modernization drive ahead of its 5G rollout, easing network strain and enhancing rural connectivity where WiFi is available. By plugging coverage gaps, BSNL aims to stem subscriber losses and compete more aggressively in India’s cutthroat telecom market.
