xAI’s Grok chatbot has restricted its public image generation feature on X to paid Premium and Premium+ subscribers, following reports of widespread abuse including deepfakes and inappropriate content.
The change, announced this week, blocks free users from creating or editing images directly in X posts and replies via Grok. Instead, they encounter upgrade prompts labeling the tool “limited to subscribers.” This move comes after viral incidents highlighted Grok’s Flux-based image generator producing controversial visuals, prompting xAI to tighten access on its platform.
That said, image generation isn’t fully paywalled. Free access persists through Grok’s standalone app and website for private use, bypassing X’s restrictions. Third-party tools leveraging xAI’s models often provide starter credits without subscriptions, though heavy usage incurs fees.
For developers, xAI’s image API powered by models like grok-2-image remains pay-per-use at roughly $0.07 per image, unchanged by X’s consumer tweaks.
The shift underscores intensifying scrutiny on AI image tools amid ethical concerns. xAI aims to curb public misuse while preserving broader availability, but it risks pushing casual users toward rivals like Midjourney or free alternatives. Premium perks now include this once-open feature, aligning Grok deeper with X’s subscription ecosystem.
