Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, remains optimistic about India’s AI future. Dismissing concerns over AI sovereignty, he highlighted India’s progress in AI, including domain-specific models. Kamakoti cited BharatGen, AI4Bharat, Sarvam AI, and Perplexity as examples. He emphasized India’s strength in talent and AI adoption, stating sovereignty will come. He noted LLMs leverage public data and advocated for ‘frugal AI’ due to resource constraints, focusing on domain-specific language models requiring fewer GPUs. This approach will foster sovereign AI solutions tailored to India’s needs, he stated.
